Coaches around Denver are blowing their whistles as they begin springtime practice in the Rockies. New leagues have formed, practice and game schedules have been distributed, and athletes all around Colorado are participating in Springtime sports. If you are a parent, you know that in addition to the excitement, there is also the innate fear of injury. Most of us try to keep it tucked in the back of our minds, but we know the risk exists.

According to the StopSportsInjuries site, here are some startling statistics:

  • High school athletes account for an estimated 2 million injuries per year
  • Children ages 5-14 account for nearly 40% of all sports-related injuries treated in hospitals. On average, the rate and severity of injury increases with a child’s age.
  • 21% of all US traumatic brain injuries occur among children participating in sports and recreational activities.

The good news is that more than half of all sports injuries are preventable. It’s important to know the facts. To learn more about youth sports injuries, and how to prevent them, visit:http://www.stopsportsinjuries.org/sports-injury-prevention.aspx
